Compact renewal 2010

The national Compact, which was originally produced in 1998, was renewed in 2010. It was published along with an Accountability and Transparency Guide, which outlines steps to take at national and local level, including dispute resolution, internal complaints procedures and ombudsmen functions.

The key motivations for the renewal were the changed priorities of the new coalition government and the need to strengthen the Compact.

The government publicly stated its commitment to the Compact and wanted it strengthened, so we discussed both what a new document could look like and how to increase its accountability and transparency.

From 20 September to 29 October 2010, we gathered views from the voluntary sector on draft text for a renewed Compact. Supported by Compact champions, our regional leaders and others, we received 129 written responses, attended 47 events across the nine regions of England and engaged with approximately 1500 individuals.

The renewed Compact was led by the Office for Civil Society, for the government, and by Compact Voice for the voluntary and community sector.

Simon Blake, Compact Voice Chair, issued a statement about the renewal, which you can read here (PDF).

In 2010, Compact Voice published a summary of the submissions received in response to the consultation on the renewed Compact, highlighting where the final document was changed based on the views of the voluntary and community sector.
