Draft Guidance on Transparency for local authorities: Compact Voice response
The Department for Communities and Local Government have published their draft 'Code of Recommended Practice for Local Authorities on Data Transparency'.
Late last year, we responded to DCLG's consultation looking at turning guidelines regarding data transparency into regulations.
DCLG welcomed comments on the newly published draft following the consultation, and you can read Compact Voice's response below.
In it, we state that Compact Voice are pleased to support the code - we share DCLG’s belief that transparency is the foundation of local accountability, and is the key that gives people the tools and information they need to enable them to play a bigger role in society.
However, we don't feel that requirements are clear on the extent of compulsion and consequence of not publishing information.
We recommended that further clarity about how the government intends to monitor compliance, what the process will be for dealing with non-compliance, and what the penalties for non-compliance will be, is necessary.
