Improving Local Government Transparency: Consultation response published

cabinet officeCabinet Office have released their response to the Improving Local Government Transparency Consultation.

The consultation response details plans to make the Code of Recommended Practice for Local Authorities on Data Transparency mandatory. Amongst other things, it will require councils to:

  • Publish details of contracts on a quarterly basis, including whether the supplier is a Small or Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) or Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisation.
  • Publish details of grants to VCS organisations on an annual basis.

In addition, the revised Code recommends that councils:

  • Include provider registration numbers for VCS organisations, such as Companies House and Charity Commission numbers, when reporting the above
  • Break down details of VCS contracts by type of voluntary organisation.

We welcome these recommendations, particularly as Compact Voice's publication 'Local Authorities and the Voluntary and Community Sector: Investigating funding and engagement' made a number similar recommendations.

Making this information freely available will allow greater transparency across government spending, and insight into how local government are adhering to the principles of the Compact.
