Thurrock

Who wants to Champion the Thurrock Compact? Just about everyone!

thurrock logoIt’s amazing what difference participating in Compact Week can make. Thurrock can look forward to working and winning together with the help of more than 30 new champions.

When Thurrock held their Compact Week event, nobody was expecting 31 people to volunteer as Compact Champions. What makes this such a remarkable achievement is that an event in one of the smallest areas in the country with 43 participants has produced one of the largest ever contingent of champions.  Inspired by Compact success stories from around the country, what has made championing their Compact so attractive to them is working and winning together.

Subsequently another 7 champions have been recruited after the event. Having so many should now boost good practice and engagement as well as helping create thriving sector, which is one of Thurrock LSP’s local area agreement priorities. Many local authorities will envy Thurrock Council in being able to work with so many champions and to now have some of their own too in the key departments.

Thurrock can also claim a first in getting individuals signed up to their Compact. Diana Hale, who chaired the event, summed up the mood when she said this was not just about “sign up and go but real personal commitment to a Compact way of working”.

So keen is CVS Chief Executive Naya Naqvi to support the new champions that within hours of the event, she was already contacting them to convene a follow up meeting. There has also been a spate of incoming messages to the CVS, including from the primary care trust, all pledging action to take their Compact forward. A champion training programme will start in 2010, along with Compact briefing for the council, before launching work to bring together thriving sector, community cohesion, and Compact implementation around the theme of pride in Thurrock.
