Do I need to run an Equality Impact Assessment as part of the process of renewing our local Compact?

While it is always useful to consider the impact to equality groups and issues when introducing or developing policies, a better longer term approach would be to ensure that individuals, groups and organisations representing different equalities strands are signed up to local Compacts and represented on local Compact working groups.

Ensuring ongoing engagement will mean that equality issues are kept high on the agenda for Compact groups, and that the needs and interests of a diverse range of stakeholders are represented.

The Compact and judicial reviews

Q: I have heard that there have been four cases where local authorities have been taken to judicial review for breaches of the Compact. Is this true?
 
A: The short answer is that a Compact breach has not directly led to a judicial review but the Compact has been referenced in judicial review proceeding and judgements.

Does the national Compact apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

The national Compact only applies in England, however, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own agreements, which are listed here.

Trafford Council replaces library staff with volunteers

This week Trafford Council announced that it was removing all of its paid staff from two local libraries and replacing them with volunteers, according to Third Sector.

If my area does not currently have a local Compact, can the national Compact be referred to if an issue arises?

Most areas in England have their own local Compact - however, in some cases where there isn't an active local Compact, or a local Authority has yet to sign up to it - the National Compact can be used in the interim.
